Clouded Leopard

Clouded leopard-Neofelis nebulosa(Scientific Name), a species of wild cat that live throughout the forests of Southeast Asiafound in India; Bangladesh; Bhutan; Cambodia; China;  Lao People's Democratic Republic; Malaysia (Peninsular Malaysia); Myanmar; Nepal; Thailand; Vietnam.

The IUCN( International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources) has categorized the species as ‘Vulnerable’ and indicates a ‘declining trend in its population, as per its Red List assessment of 2016.

Habitat-Clouded leopards primarily live in lowland tropical rainforests, but can also be found in dry woodlands and secondary forests. They have been spotted at elevations up to 9000 feet in the Himalayan mountains. Clouded Leopards prefer closed forest.

Threats:Clouded Leopard skins have been observed in large numbers in illegal wildlife trade in Southeast Asia, trade in bones for medicines, meat for exotic dishes and live animals for the pet trade and habitat loss.
It is also protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, India.
It is also included in the Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), making international trade in this species illegal.
